Terre Haute, June 21 – Charles William Payton, 85 years old, died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. James Roberts, 120 north 30th street , Friday.  He was born in Montgomery County near Waveland, on Sept 8, 1838. Besides the widow, Elza Jane Payton, he is survived by one son, William Payton of Terre Haute; one daughter, Mrs. Roberts; one sister and two brothers, Lucinda Stump and Pierce Payton of New Market, Ind and David Payton of Crawfordsville; 8 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Mr. Payton moved to Terre Haute 36 years ago and was associated with Blair, Fally and Ragan in the old heading factory which was located where the Union Depot now stands. He later was employed by the city of Terre Haute, and it was he who planted the trees which now beautify Ohio Blvd. Mr. Payton was an active member of the First Baptist Church until a few years ago when his failing health compelled him to retire from his activities in the church. Had Mr. Payton lived until February, he would have celebrated his 65th wedding anniversary. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the residence, 120 North 30th street. - kbz
